What is Life Insurance?
 Life
insurance is a contract between the policy owner (holder) and
the insurance company. In the event something occurs that is
covered by the policy, a benefit is paid to the beneficiary designated
in the policy. As the term life insurance implies, the event
usually involves the death of the people (the insured) named
in the policy.
Please note, the above paragraph
mentioned four distinct entities:
- the insurance policy owner
- the insurance company
- the insured
- the beneficiary
Some of these entities may be
a single person/company, and some may not. It is important to
recognize and understand this fact when structuring a strategy.
Typically the insurance policy owner and the insured are the
same person (entity) in a life insurance policy for an individual
concerned about providing for his/her family (beneficiary) in
the event of death. However, if life insurance policies are being
used to cross insure two business partners, the insurance policy
owner is usually the company the two partners own, the insured
is one of the partners, and the beneficiary could be the other
partner.
