What is auto insurance?
 Auto
insurance, aka car insurance, is a contract between an auto insurance
company and you. A car insurance policy protects you financially
from losses that can arise from the use of your car, SUV or pickup
truck. Depending on the type of coverage you elect, auto insurance
may pay to fix your car after an accident. Car insurance may
also pay to fix another person's automobile if you're responsible
for the damages. Most states require automobile owners to carry
certain minimum car insurance coverage, such as liability.
The components of car insurance
Usually an automobile insurance
policy has 3 components:
- Liability Coverage - for property
damage and bodily injury caused to others.
- Medical Coverage - for you
and/or your passengers.
- Collision/comprehensive - for
the repair of your auto.
If you are responsible for an
accident that causes injury or loss to someone else, the liability
provisions contained in your auto insurance policy protects you
for claims made by the other person(s) up to the limits of the
policy. The medical coverage provisions of you car insurance
policy addresses the medical and hospital bills that you and/or
the passengers in your car may incur up to the limits of the
policy. The collision/comprehensive coverage provisions define
the financial obligations of the insurance company for damage
to your car due to an accident, fire, theft or vandalism. All
of these coverages are limited to the amount stated on your policy.
