What is Renters Insurance?

Renters insurance is a variation of traditional house insurance. Since one can rent a home, some people feel this is a form of homeowners insurance, but is not. These are two distinct products; one covers real property (home owners insurance) while the other (renters insurance) does not.

Many renters think they are automatically insured under the landlord's (building owner) hazard insurance policy. They are not. The building owner will have the real property insured as well as have some form of liability insurance. This will not include the renter's personal property or liability responsibility.

Renters should contact an insurance agent to discuss renters insurance if they want to protect their personal property and have liability coverage. Too many renters discover they aren't insured after they have a major loss. Don't be one of them.
