What is Group Health Insurance?
Group
health insurance provides health insurance protection for your
company's employees. Your company can be either a large employer
(51 or more employees) or a small employer (2 to 50 employees).
A single group health insurance master policy is issued to the
company (employer), and the group members (employees) are insured
against a common set of medical conditions.
Why Group Health Insurance?
Employers usually offer its
employees group health insurance within a benefit package. Because
risks are spread across the entire group, the per employee cost
of group coverage is usually less similar health coverage on
an individual basis. Employees will usually have the option to
get the health insurance coverage on an individual basis, for
the entire family or with a spouse.
Sometimes an employee or family
member may not be able to get individual health insurance. The
only way to get coverage may be through a group health insurance
plan. For example, the State of Illinois requires that all health
insurance policies for small employer groups (2-50 employees)
must be issued on a guarantee-issue basis subject to preexisting
condition requirements. This means the applicant must be guaranteed
coverage without evidence of insurability up to an agreed amount
or level. In addition, all group insurance policies must be guarantee-renewable
provided the employer has complied with the terms of the health
insurance contract and has kept current with the premiums.
Many employers realize health
insurance coverage for its employees can be a strong incentive
for employee retention. In spite of the rising costs of health
insurance, a solid health plan is still more economical than
absorbing the costs of employee turnover. Furthermore, most individuals
are aware of the health care crisis in America, and they are
now more willing to share the cost of insurance with their employer.
The key to meeting the objectives of both employee and employer
is to balance coverages with costs. There is a vast array of
options, and it requires the expertise of a professional to develop
a plan that is both comprehensive and affordable. PTP Insurance
Agents has the experience and knowledge to do just that. Put
us to work for you. |
