Auto Insurance Terms

Bodily Injury Liability Coverage: Helps to pay for claims from anyone you injured in an accident, up to the limit defined in your auto insurance policy.

Collision Coverage: When an accident that involves a collision with another car or object, the collision coverage provisions in the auto insurance policy will define the insurance company's financial obligation to repair the damage to your car, subject to any deductible, regardless of who causes the accident. Some examples of a collision loss are:

  • your car strikes an object like a fence or tree
  • your car gets damaged from debris lying in the road
  • your car hits or is hit by another vehicle
  • you hit a pedestrian, causing damage your car
  • a shopping cart dents you car

Comprehensive Coverage: If a loss occurs that is not from a collision, such as theft, fire, vandalism or glass breakage, the comprehensive coverage provisions in the auto insurance policy will define the insurance company's financial obligation to repair the damage to your car, subject to any deductible. Some examples of a comprehensive loss include:

  • your car is maliciously scratched
  • a tree falls on your auto, and it is damaged
  • the tires are slashed
  • your car's windshield gets cracked by a rock
  • your auto gets flooded

Liability Coverage: If you are responsible for an accident, you are also responsible for the property and physical damages incurred by the other people in the accident. The liability provisions in an auto insurance policy protect you by obligating the insurance company to pay for these damages up to the limits specified in the policy.

Property Damage Liability Coverage: Covers repair or replacement of the property damaged or destroyed by you, up to the limit you purchased in your auto insurance policy.

Uninsured & Underinsured Motorists: If a driver with no auto insurance or insufficient liability coverage causes an accident, the uninsured & underinsured motorist provision in your auto insurance policy will cover you and your passengers for bodily injury damages sustained in the accident up to the limits defined in the policy.
