Liability Coverage for Car Insurance

The liability coverage in your car insurance policy should be high enough to protect all of your assets (savings accounts, personal possessions, houses, vehicles, etc). If you are responsible for injuries and/or damages caused in a serious auto accident those assets could be targeted in a lawsuit. If the value of your assets exceeds the highest liability offered for an auto insurance policy, you should consider an umbrella policy (personal excess liability coverage).

Even if you don't feel compelled to have liability coverage in a car insurance policy, you must have it. It is the law! The State of Illinois currently requires the following minimum amounts:

  • $20,000 - injury or death of a single individual.
  • $40,000 - injury or death of more than one individual.
  • $15,000 - damage to property of another individual.

Medical Coverage for Car Insurance

Regardless of fault, medical coverage helps pay for medical expenses incurred by you and your passengers injured in an accident. Medical payments may also cover you and your family members if injured while riding in someone else's car. The amounts paid are limited to the terms and conditions contained in the car insurance policy.

Collision & Comprehensive Coverage for Car Insurance

The collision and comprehensive coverage provisions contained in a car insurance policy address the physical damage to your automobile. Damage to your car caused by another vehicle or if your car runs into an object is addressed by the collision coverage contained in the car insurance policy. Comprehensive coverage pays for physical damage to your car caused by perils. Perils are things like damage caused by animals, hail, fire, theft, and vandalism.
